Relaxation Helps to Improve Work & Personal Life

Relaxation: a group of 12 people helped to improve their Work & Personal Life by spending just 1 hour each week with me.

Between March and April 2013 a voluntary Relaxation session was held for one hour on a Wednesday evenings over a 6 week period. Local residents of Healds Green and Heights Lane, Chadderton were invited to attend to explore relaxation for the mind and body.

Relaxation using Mindfulness Meditation, Hypnotherapy, Laughter Therapy and How to manage Stress were the main topics of our sessions.

My approach to the ‘Relaxation group’ was open making it clear that if anyone felt this wasn’t for them they were free to leave at anytime and I would not be disappointed. A guided meditation was used to introduce the physical aspect of relaxation. The conditions for relaxation were not ideal, upright chairs without arms, a mixture of strangers and friends in close proximity to each other. Despite the situation it was obvious that the majority of people were following my guidance and they were ‘relaxing’ deeply.relaxing sea scene with lounger

Sleep deprivation, stress from work and stress from everyday life issues, were just some of the conditions affecting the members. We also had some attendees with particular issues including pain and recovery from serious illness. Mindfulness was used to aid relaxation in the group at the sessions and for use in everyday life situations.

Stress management was introduced to the group providing ways of how to cope with stress. Ways in which to manage the effects of stress and to recognise stressful situations were shared with the group. Having a clear understanding of the possible detriment to long term general health helped to promote deeper interest in self relaxation. Most members found it difficult to find time at home to indulge in self relaxation and preferred to attend the relaxation group evenings. Some nice results were fed back to the group throughout the weeks and overall each group member has found great benefit from attending. As a result of the benefits gained by the group we are now holding a monthly meeting to allow group members to enjoy relaxing in a neutral environment.

Typical improvements fed back were: increased confidence in general and specifically at work, enjoying a good nights sleep the first time for many years, arm and neck pain now less painful and has provided space to sleep, being prepared and in control at work when confrontational issues arise, being able to control breathing so panicky feelings don’t surface anymore, the ability to see situations at work for what they are without worrying about them.

My services were donated free of charge to assist in the promotion and use of The Old School by local residents. The hall over recent years has been carefully and tastefully restored by a group of local residents and is for the benefit of residents in the immediate area.

Weight Loss

How do I lose Weight? Weight Loss is such a challenge!

The question lots of people ask me is can you help me with weight loss? People are full of good intentions to make sure a new regime is put into motion. So many people see others as the way to helping them to tackle weight loss. Yes you need the support of those around you, family friends etc. Unless you take control yourself and be responsible for what you decide to eat then all the help in the world will amount to very little.

Counting the calories after eating and drinking to excess is a little late, looking to the future and planning to manage your lifestyle is a good start.weight loss tape

Some of the set backs that tend to thwart weight loss candidates come from the long dark cold days of winter when warm comforting food overpowers the strongest of will powers and before you know it your good intentions are beaten. Will power is normally to help you over a very short period of time. Using it as the main ‘driver’ in your weight loss campaign is destine for failure.

DON’T beat yourself up if you need to have a fix of something you crave, just have a very small pea on a fork weight lossportion, for example if it is chocolate just ration yourself to one small square and tell yourself that other fresh natural foods taste better and are better for your health. If you want something warm and comforting to eat make a fresh vegetable soup and add some toasted almonds just before you serve it (they add a satisfying crunch). Living on extremely small amounts of food isn’t the answer long term and finding the right balance is very important. Taking advice from a nutritionist or General Practitioner would also provide some guidance towards reaching the changes you need.

Seek out your nearest NCH registered Hypnotherapist for assistance with weight loss and weight control. Counting calories certainly gives you a good idea how of much fuel you are taking on board so that you can moderate your food and drink intake. Also you should consider looking at exercise, I don’t mean a marathon run or body building just something more than you do at present. Many commentators suggest quick walking 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes. Again seek advice from your General Practitioner before embarking on any plan of strenuous exercise. And give yourself time to relax, deeply relax so your mind can be clear and you can focus on the important things in life.relaxing sea scene with lounger

Christmas – is the Goose getting fat?

Control the calories before and during Christmas so January doesn’t see you FAT

It is the old rhyme that features the Goose being fattened ready for the Christmas feast. Don’t follow in the steps of the Goose getting fat from eating too much in a short period of time. Extra weight is often put on during the Christmas celebrations when large amounts of food in the home somehow signifies wealth and happiness. At festive times there is always a list of highly calorific foods available. If you are going to eat any of these high calorie rich food goodies e.g. mince pies, rich fruit cake, hand made chocolates then take control and limit what you eat. Check out the calorie count before you buy or eat any of these seasonal celebratory foods. The same goes for alcoholic drinks, moderation is always a valid path to take.

Try swapping something out of your normal meal when you have one of these treats. For example cut out bread and butter for the base of a sandwich and have a wrap instead or use large lettuce leaves stuffed with your choice of filling. There are plenty of ideas for healthy lower calorie foods and meals on the internet – having a balance is the aim of any good meal and diet.

Some people get caught up eating or even gorging on these high calorie foods at Christmastime due to stress or upset, so try relaxing quietly on your own for 5 or 10 minutes. Just have a quiet day dream imagine somewhere special for example a favourite holiday place.

So don’t wait for January until you see the FAT problem.  Christmas is coming and so is January, New Year resolutions can start now and get you ready to avoid extra FAT and weight gain.

Good Luck.

London Olympics 2012 the showcase for top performers

The Olympics – The Olympic Games will be the showcase for sports men and women in 2012. What will be the key to their success?

Great physical ability and talent in a chosen sport will go a long way to ensuring success at the Olympics, couple this with natural and learned skills,  and a top performer will be made. Sometimes in the Olympics the physical aspects of the Olympic athlete, Olympic cyclist, Olympic footballer, Olympic tennis player, Olympic boxer or Olympic marksman to name just a few is not enough to make them an Olympic Gold medal winner. What about their mind fitness; their doubts, fear of the competition, fear of not performing to their normal level on the day how do they beat that?

Being and staying positive is not easy. No matter how well things are going for the Olympic athlete the slightest diversion or unexpected occurrence can derail their focus. This is why many athletes  have a personal coach who is trained either in psychology or mind coaching. The coach might use hypnotherapy as a natural resource to keep the athlete focused or regular meditation to clear the mind of outside distractions. The Olympics will generate its own stresses and distractions in one of the busiest City’s in the world

One aspect of  success at The London Olympics will come from the occasion, visualisation of taking an Olympic Gold Medal or breaking a world and Olympic record often produces performance way above the normal level of achievement. So is it the mind or the focus of the individual at the Olympics, have they trained more rigorously, followed a different diet or is it down to the stars above or position of the moon on the day? The answer is probably a number of these activities combined to make an improvement.  If you improve 5 aspects of your performance by just 1% then combined you have a 5% improvement overall to help you to become a winner at the Olympics 2012.

Keeping a cool head when the heat is on is not easy, imagine staying calm and controlled just as you are about to run in the Olympic 100 mts final and you are up against the worlds best. Do you wonder if you are good enough, fast enough, will you finish last – the winner will not have allowed these thoughts into their mind only positive thoughts, their routine, their techniques and the winning celebration will be allowed. So focus and a positive mind set will be vital tools to have a belief in themselves and their ability will be paramount.

High blood pressure

Hypertension – Hypnotension practical help.

Modern life here in the west gives us many things to be grateful for – clean water, sanitation, good housing, good & plentiful food, the latest technology and cutting edge medical treatments, to name just a few.

Yet with all of our good fortune many people suffer from hypertension or high blood pressure (among many other illnesses). Often this condition ‘sneaks’ up on you and around 90% of people with the condition have no clear reason as to why it occurs – there are many causes the difficulty is attributing what causes your particular situation.

Is it hereditary, genetic, a diet rich in ‘the wrong type’ of fats, a high intake of processed food and sugars,  a lack of exercise, smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, exposure to uncontrollable high levels of stress, fear, guilt and anxiety these are just some of the most recognised causes.

Then how do we cope with this condition a trip to your local Doctor will establish your blood pressure and determine if it is within a ‘normal’ range. The Doctor will if required prescribe medication and advise you on life style changes that are required. There are plenty of things you as an individual can do to help yourself – reduce the intake of alcohol, avoid the wrong type of fatty food, monitor the type of diet you are eating, reduce and manage stress where possible and exercise (check with your Doctor first) on a regular basis 3-4 times a week for 30-45 minutes is suggested (no need to run a marathon).

In addition to the above you could consider Hypnotension™ (therapy combined with hypnosis aimed purely at tackling high blood pressure) from a certified practitioner. This method helps you to find ways of improving areas that perhaps medication alone cannot overcome. For further information visit http://www.hypnotension.com and take a look at what’s on offer.

Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey – Is it good for you?

The television spectacular ‘Downton Abbey’ has created a great deal of interest across the UK and no doubt will sell well through out the world.  Is this drama good for the people who watch it?  What is the real appeal, is it the British love of going back to a time where money for some appeared to be no object, where class was clearly defined with extravagance and people had order? Or is it the setting in a house that few if any could ever aspire to owning and the rich surrounding countryside which must appear as heavenly especially if you live in an inner city surrounded by concrete and traffic?  Or is it the story line fiction at its best?

My view is that it must bring relief and escapism for some, to drift away for 90 minutes following the happenings of a large wealthy household with superb costumes, furniture, decor and great acting has to be a relaxing and calming influence on the mind and your health. Or could it generate a longing for riches outside of ones reach? Does it tempt us to rush out and buy a lottery ticket in the hope of instant wealth?

We are all different and our interpretation of what we see is different. Going back in time might stimulate thoughts of our own ancestors who were around then and perhaps they worked in service. May be stories have been handed down over the years of their life and encounters to match the pictures in an old biscuit tin.

Relaxation through hypnotherapy can provide a welcome relief for many with sleeping problems or for those who are restless and agitated. Watching an old movie or even a new one like Downton can and does provide a welcome distraction from our everyday lives, so that must be a good thing, yes? Drifting off for a short period of time is most likely good for anyone unless of course you are driving, flying a plane or operating machinery!! you get the picture.

So watching Downton, an old film or a anything that helps you relax and forget the here and now is worth it. Enjoy.

Hypnosis – Valentines Day

Adv Dip H – Advance Diploma Hypnotherapy

I ended January on a high with the achievement of gaining the Advance diploma in hypnotherapy. After completing many hours of research, study and a few late nights I put it all together and passed with a high standard of work. Hypnotherapy is really about helping people help themselves, whilst studying is good for me it is done with the belief that it will be more beneficial for the client now and in the future. We live in a changing world and keeping up sometimes takes away our energy and motivation, the key is to make it work for you and not to become a slave to trends and fashions just to keep up.

I’m sure there are plenty of people around the Manchester area that are under stress from trying to keep up with:- work, the needs of family, money and possibly illness or caring for someone. Relaxation through hypnotherapy is just one way of winding down. There are many people throughout the world using self-hypnosis everyday to realise a state of  calmness and improve control over their lives. Hypnosis is not only for the individual, group sessions are often held to enable a group of friends to discover how hypnosis and relaxation therapy can work for them. Other groups use hypnotherapy for weight loss control or smoking, of course hypnotherapy in a group means that it is ‘generalised’ and not a specific tailored treatment for each individual. Having said that, group hypnosis and hypnotherapy does appeal to many.

A new month February – ‘Valentines day’ and ‘Pancake Tuesday’ (or Shrove Tuesday) just two days that generate a number of passions and commercial stimulation.  Cards, flowers, chocolate hearts, flour eggs and ‘squeezy’ lemon juice just a few items that will be on many of our shopping lists in the coming days. Whatever you are buying for your loved ones attach a special thought to the gift, think about what it means, what message do you want it to give and it will make it that little bit more special, go on give it a try!

NHS-Hypnotherapy, It’s The Future

In a recent BBC Radio 4 interview two ‘professional’ experts were discussing the merits of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy and how it has a part to play in the future of U.K. health-care.

Surprise, surprise at last these people and their associates have discovered what other people have known for decades that hypnotherapy does actually work WITHOUT the need for drugs.

Dr Peter Naish, president of the Royal Society Medicine and Dr Clare Gerada, chair of the Royal College of GPs agreed that using hypnosis for a range of conditions could serve patients better and save money.

How strange that after so many years of serious ‘drug pushing’ the scientific establishments are now keen to dabble in an art form to help people. And of course this approach should only be available through the trustworthy medical profession!!

Provision is currently under way to make training available to trainee medics. It should only be in the hands of “professional medically trained people, Doctors, nurses,  etc.” according to Dr. Naish and not left to ‘people listed in ‘Yellow pages’.  Are there any GPs in Yellow pages I wonder?.

Yes, no doubt there are some unscrupulous people out there who shouldn’t be offering any form of therapy to the public and yet recently we have seen how the NHS employ a number of people who shouldn’t be left in charge of a piece of wood least of all caring for patients. (Channel 4 showed appalling staff behaviour in a Northwest Hospital and the whistle blowing of (alleged) staff cruelty at a care home are two examples of  how our trustworthy establishment operates).

Being very cynical here and based on my own personal experience, is this acceptance of Hypnosis anything to do with a reduction in funds for GPs. There is pressure (or will be) to cut back on the dishing out of drugs and to ensure they (GPs) keep their own level of income add another ‘professional’ skill to the Gladstone bag.

I can’t see any of these trustworthy professionals standing up and saying ‘actually we have behaved like the bankers, for years we have been spending the tax payers money on outrageously expensive drugs when we could have been using Hypnosis and associated therapies to treat you with great outcomes in  shorter periods of time and without a string of side effects’.  Sorry that’s my cynicism getting in the way again. I wonder if they (GPs) are going to train in Reiki, Reflexology, Osteopathy, Herbal medicine to name just a few of the ‘alternative’ treatments on offer to the public outside of the NHS.

The above is just my personal view and thoughts on a topic that helps me to help people.
