Weight Loss

How do I lose Weight? Weight Loss is such a challenge!

The question lots of people ask me is can you help me with weight loss? People are full of good intentions to make sure a new regime is put into motion. So many people see others as the way to helping them to tackle weight loss. Yes you need the support of those around you, family friends etc. Unless you take control yourself and be responsible for what you decide to eat then all the help in the world will amount to very little.

Counting the calories after eating and drinking to excess is a little late, looking to the future and planning to manage your lifestyle is a good start.weight loss tape

Some of the set backs that tend to thwart weight loss candidates come from the long dark cold days of winter when warm comforting food overpowers the strongest of will powers and before you know it your good intentions are beaten. Will power is normally to help you over a very short period of time. Using it as the main ‘driver’ in your weight loss campaign is destine for failure.

DON’T beat yourself up if you need to have a fix of something you crave, just have a very small pea on a fork weight lossportion, for example if it is chocolate just ration yourself to one small square and tell yourself that other fresh natural foods taste better and are better for your health. If you want something warm and comforting to eat make a fresh vegetable soup and add some toasted almonds just before you serve it (they add a satisfying crunch). Living on extremely small amounts of food isn’t the answer long term and finding the right balance is very important. Taking advice from a nutritionist or General Practitioner would also provide some guidance towards reaching the changes you need.

Seek out your nearest NCH registered Hypnotherapist for assistance with weight loss and weight control. Counting calories certainly gives you a good idea how of much fuel you are taking on board so that you can moderate your food and drink intake. Also you should consider looking at exercise, I don’t mean a marathon run or body building just something more than you do at present. Many commentators suggest quick walking 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes. Again seek advice from your General Practitioner before embarking on any plan of strenuous exercise. And give yourself time to relax, deeply relax so your mind can be clear and you can focus on the important things in life.relaxing sea scene with lounger

Christmas – is the Goose getting fat?

Control the calories before and during Christmas so January doesn’t see you FAT

It is the old rhyme that features the Goose being fattened ready for the Christmas feast. Don’t follow in the steps of the Goose getting fat from eating too much in a short period of time. Extra weight is often put on during the Christmas celebrations when large amounts of food in the home somehow signifies wealth and happiness. At festive times there is always a list of highly calorific foods available. If you are going to eat any of these high calorie rich food goodies e.g. mince pies, rich fruit cake, hand made chocolates then take control and limit what you eat. Check out the calorie count before you buy or eat any of these seasonal celebratory foods. The same goes for alcoholic drinks, moderation is always a valid path to take.

Try swapping something out of your normal meal when you have one of these treats. For example cut out bread and butter for the base of a sandwich and have a wrap instead or use large lettuce leaves stuffed with your choice of filling. There are plenty of ideas for healthy lower calorie foods and meals on the internet – having a balance is the aim of any good meal and diet.

Some people get caught up eating or even gorging on these high calorie foods at Christmastime due to stress or upset, so try relaxing quietly on your own for 5 or 10 minutes. Just have a quiet day dream imagine somewhere special for example a favourite holiday place.

So don’t wait for January until you see the FAT problem.  Christmas is coming and so is January, New Year resolutions can start now and get you ready to avoid extra FAT and weight gain.

Good Luck.

Sales – Be the best sales person with self-hypnosis

Who is a sales person? We all have a role as a sales person, believe me it’s true.

Whatever we do in life somewhere along the road we have to become a salesperson. Whether we know it or not, like it or not. Whether it’s for financial reward or just to improve our life the art of selling is a part of our existence. Remember your first girlfriend / boyfriend, you had to sell yourself to them whether it was done consciously or not. We go on through life using our in built ability to promote ourselves in a job, a relationship, a family, a sports team to name just a few. Where we need to persuade, coerce or win over others then our selling ability needs to shines through.

Not everyone is good at sales. There are lots of people who are not at all good and this often includes people who have been trained to sell some obviously are better than others. Some will have to work at it, rehearse and polish their performance to a level that looks natural and convincing. Everyone providing a service or doing a job of work has to accept that they have a part to play in ‘selling’ themselves and the benefits of their organisation internally as well as externally.

‘He’s a natural born salesman’ and ‘he could charm the birds out of the trees’  are couple of sayings and descriptions that when examined relate to a person’s ‘natural’ ability to communicate, to talk and ultimately to ‘sell’ themselves to their intended target.

Often the good sales people have an abundance of ‘in built skills’ that they have subconsciously gathered during their formative years. Communication skills in particular give the good sales person an edge.  I’m not just talking about talking, instead I mean listening to the words used,  looking at the facial clues, the body language, eye movement and micro expressions.

When someone is telling you a story, you may have a ‘gut feeling’ that you are perhaps not getting the truth. This instinctive reaction is based on detailed evidence that you have stored in your subconscious during your formative years and your subconscious is now sending you a warning. Facial expressions, body movements and tone of voice are just a few. I know that is a very simplistic explanation yet that is how we evolve and move forward in life. Benefit from discovering some new ways of getting in tune with your customers, colleagues, family and friends.

So could you become a better salesperson using self-hypnosis? Of course it’s possible. Recognise your natural intuitive abilities and harness them in a more effective manner and see your performance improve. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis allow you to find a way to access deep relaxation which better prepares you to handle pressure. The challenge of meeting targets, closing the deal and managing stress in your workplace becomes easier to control.

Hypnosis and Self Hypnosis can make a difference to your life. A good place to start to learn is from a trained Hypnotherapist, open up a new way of enjoying and improving your life. You can drop me an email and start the ball rolling today!

Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey – Is it good for you?

The television spectacular ‘Downton Abbey’ has created a great deal of interest across the UK and no doubt will sell well through out the world.  Is this drama good for the people who watch it?  What is the real appeal, is it the British love of going back to a time where money for some appeared to be no object, where class was clearly defined with extravagance and people had order? Or is it the setting in a house that few if any could ever aspire to owning and the rich surrounding countryside which must appear as heavenly especially if you live in an inner city surrounded by concrete and traffic?  Or is it the story line fiction at its best?

My view is that it must bring relief and escapism for some, to drift away for 90 minutes following the happenings of a large wealthy household with superb costumes, furniture, decor and great acting has to be a relaxing and calming influence on the mind and your health. Or could it generate a longing for riches outside of ones reach? Does it tempt us to rush out and buy a lottery ticket in the hope of instant wealth?

We are all different and our interpretation of what we see is different. Going back in time might stimulate thoughts of our own ancestors who were around then and perhaps they worked in service. May be stories have been handed down over the years of their life and encounters to match the pictures in an old biscuit tin.

Relaxation through hypnotherapy can provide a welcome relief for many with sleeping problems or for those who are restless and agitated. Watching an old movie or even a new one like Downton can and does provide a welcome distraction from our everyday lives, so that must be a good thing, yes? Drifting off for a short period of time is most likely good for anyone unless of course you are driving, flying a plane or operating machinery!! you get the picture.

So watching Downton, an old film or a anything that helps you relax and forget the here and now is worth it. Enjoy.

Hypnosis – Valentines Day

Adv Dip H – Advance Diploma Hypnotherapy

I ended January on a high with the achievement of gaining the Advance diploma in hypnotherapy. After completing many hours of research, study and a few late nights I put it all together and passed with a high standard of work. Hypnotherapy is really about helping people help themselves, whilst studying is good for me it is done with the belief that it will be more beneficial for the client now and in the future. We live in a changing world and keeping up sometimes takes away our energy and motivation, the key is to make it work for you and not to become a slave to trends and fashions just to keep up.

I’m sure there are plenty of people around the Manchester area that are under stress from trying to keep up with:- work, the needs of family, money and possibly illness or caring for someone. Relaxation through hypnotherapy is just one way of winding down. There are many people throughout the world using self-hypnosis everyday to realise a state of  calmness and improve control over their lives. Hypnosis is not only for the individual, group sessions are often held to enable a group of friends to discover how hypnosis and relaxation therapy can work for them. Other groups use hypnotherapy for weight loss control or smoking, of course hypnotherapy in a group means that it is ‘generalised’ and not a specific tailored treatment for each individual. Having said that, group hypnosis and hypnotherapy does appeal to many.

A new month February – ‘Valentines day’ and ‘Pancake Tuesday’ (or Shrove Tuesday) just two days that generate a number of passions and commercial stimulation.  Cards, flowers, chocolate hearts, flour eggs and ‘squeezy’ lemon juice just a few items that will be on many of our shopping lists in the coming days. Whatever you are buying for your loved ones attach a special thought to the gift, think about what it means, what message do you want it to give and it will make it that little bit more special, go on give it a try!

Happy New Year – Goodbye to Christmas

The Festive Season 2011 is now over and done with bring on 2012!!

This time of year is when the pressure for many people becomes overwhelming. Thinking of the people who are no longer here to share the joy of life, thinking of the good times gone by and worrying about what the future holds. All of these thoughts and emotions can have an affect on us.  Some people cope well with this time and absorb the celebrations, enjoying the lifting of their spirits! Others are overcome with grief of a time or situation gone by and they become unsettled possibly suffering from stress or depression and wanting this time to pass quickly. Some may well turn to the relief of over drinking or even overeating. Help may be close at hand, just by simply listening and giving time to the person who is encountering this difficult period the gloom may be lifted and they too can enjoy the ‘time of goodwill’ and look forward to a New Year of valuable life.

It is also a great time to get in touch with those long standing friends and relatives who you meant to contact during the year and for the normal reasons of everyday life you failed to complete the excercise. Making ‘resolutions’ often seems to be a quick fix statement then the rest of the year kicks in and the resolutions are but a distant memory! Planning is not everyones’ cup of tea, I find that it helps me and I have helped clients through hypnosis to make planning work (see hypnotic coaching).

There is a saying attributed to John Lennon that says “Life is what happens to you while  you’re busy making plans” which is a good way to make us think about how we use plans in our life.  Making an effort to get in touch and see old friends can provide a welcome boost to your life whether or not you use a plan. Put a deadline date on when you will make that contact and just do it!! You do have to start somewhere and at some time, now or in the future, using New Year wishes is as good a place as any to start, good luck.

Thank you for reading this blog please accept my sincere wishes for a Happy New Year 2012, and make life work for you while you are here to enjoy.

Stress how do I beat it?

Stress  how do I beat it and is it killing me? was a question put to me recently by a long standing friend  who feels he is running a marathon everyday just to stand still. Modern life appears to create greater stresses on us all in one form or another.

We have work and careers, all driven by targets and the threat of the outcome if you fail, the modern day whip! Irrespective of your profession or job the pressure of targets exist, many people have a need to achieve, others a desire to achieve and this is an area that helps to generate good and bad stresses.

Back to my friend who really believes that the stress in his life will eventually kill him, may be not directly, it could be the cause of an illness leading to his demise, who knows. He has worked hard in his job carving a way up the ladder and has in the main enjoyed his work coping with the ups and downs of management and life changes. Now factors outside of his control impinge on his performance, frustration creeps in he is no longer in control and thus stress changes his normally mild, easy going ‘can do’ manner to one of  ‘don’t bother me I’ve got things on my mind’.

Not only do people have their own issues to contemplate, there are the cutbacks to jobs, a longer working life, price rises, inflation and institutions you can no longer trust (dare we mention banks!) that muddy the already cloudy water. Yes there are people out there who take this stuff in their stride and what is stress to them? For every one person able to cope and manage their difficulties there is another who cannot. Maybe they like my friend have now turned a corner into an unknown street full of perceived threats that they have not experienced before, what do they do? What do we do?

Ever felt like that? Ever felt like you don’t want to go to work and stayed in bed? Do you struggle to smile or even laugh? Is every small issue likely to become a major problem? You have to eat something even though you have just had a meal? Drink has become a welcome friend? These are all indicators that stress could be knocking on your personal door.

Don’t think you have to grin and bare it! Some might say “keep your chin up and show some fighting spirit” which is a great attitude and normally imparted by the person who is sitting on top of the world where all of their ducks are in a row and life is a breeze (possibly a banker!).

Professional help is out there for you or at least talk to friend or someone close to you (wife, partner etc).  Getting things out in the open will help you to identify the issues that lead to a stressful existence, talk about how you could overcome some of the issues, one piece at a time and make a plan.  For example if you are going to improve your diet or start a fitness regime, write it down with a start date and put the note somewhere to remind you of your decision and then think about you and identify the great qualities you have!

Good luck

Fat, I’m Fat, what do I do? Help starving people

Plenty of people may think to themselves ‘I’m Fat, what do I do?’, not many will admit to friends or family that weight and eating is their problem.

Lets face it being fat has a number of negatives that cause concern not only in a medical, health related way, it also raises personal issues with loved ones and friends, it can damage your career, ouch! it can lead to depression and a miserable existence.

Eating can be seen as the essential function of life, the fuel that keeps the engine going yet here in the west we have too much choice in the way of food and we put a great deal of pressure on the engine by eating too much food.

In the poorer countries of the world there is scarcely enough grain and water to keep people from dying through starvation, just the extreme basics can keep people alive and often that is not available to them. Why is there such an imbalance? I fear that question would never receive a simple one line answer.

The internet has an array of products to buy and read all related to the latest miracle of how to lose weight, how to look good, have a flat tummy in 30 days, etc. etc. the list goes on and on.

I try and help people to overcome their weight issues and I’m sure there are plenty of other people out there doing the same.  I find that while we are all different and different foods effect us in different ways there is always one action or measure that can be successful in weight management – Eat Less, weigh your portions, keep a daily log of your intake, just one week will give you a picture that may surprise you!

Once you have a clear picture of the quantity you eat try and reduce it by say 20% and see what happens, the next week another 20% until you start to lose weight.

One thing we could all do throughout the wealthy west is to miss out just One meal every other day. Calculate how much that meal or fast food fix would have cost and donate the amount to the starving people of our world, just an idea, think what we could achieve?

Lose weight and feed people – would that make you happy?

NHS-Hypnotherapy, It’s The Future

In a recent BBC Radio 4 interview two ‘professional’ experts were discussing the merits of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy and how it has a part to play in the future of U.K. health-care.

Surprise, surprise at last these people and their associates have discovered what other people have known for decades that hypnotherapy does actually work WITHOUT the need for drugs.

Dr Peter Naish, president of the Royal Society Medicine and Dr Clare Gerada, chair of the Royal College of GPs agreed that using hypnosis for a range of conditions could serve patients better and save money.

How strange that after so many years of serious ‘drug pushing’ the scientific establishments are now keen to dabble in an art form to help people. And of course this approach should only be available through the trustworthy medical profession!!

Provision is currently under way to make training available to trainee medics. It should only be in the hands of “professional medically trained people, Doctors, nurses,  etc.” according to Dr. Naish and not left to ‘people listed in ‘Yellow pages’.  Are there any GPs in Yellow pages I wonder?.

Yes, no doubt there are some unscrupulous people out there who shouldn’t be offering any form of therapy to the public and yet recently we have seen how the NHS employ a number of people who shouldn’t be left in charge of a piece of wood least of all caring for patients. (Channel 4 showed appalling staff behaviour in a Northwest Hospital and the whistle blowing of (alleged) staff cruelty at a care home are two examples of  how our trustworthy establishment operates).

Being very cynical here and based on my own personal experience, is this acceptance of Hypnosis anything to do with a reduction in funds for GPs. There is pressure (or will be) to cut back on the dishing out of drugs and to ensure they (GPs) keep their own level of income add another ‘professional’ skill to the Gladstone bag.

I can’t see any of these trustworthy professionals standing up and saying ‘actually we have behaved like the bankers, for years we have been spending the tax payers money on outrageously expensive drugs when we could have been using Hypnosis and associated therapies to treat you with great outcomes in  shorter periods of time and without a string of side effects’.  Sorry that’s my cynicism getting in the way again. I wonder if they (GPs) are going to train in Reiki, Reflexology, Osteopathy, Herbal medicine to name just a few of the ‘alternative’ treatments on offer to the public outside of the NHS.

The above is just my personal view and thoughts on a topic that helps me to help people.
